The editorial references the magazine's founding editor, historian James Weinstein, and how in 1976 he drew inspiration from the 1913 "Appeal to Reason," the Progressive Era socialist weekly published in Girard, Kansas: the masthead for your frontispiece. Yes, that's the one! Eugene v Debs, Hellen Keller, and others all wrote for it. It was the Socialist Party USA paper. I think a lot of people have been inspired by it.
