This weekend’s Reasonable Movie is Pan’s Labyrinth by Guillermo Del Torro. It’s set during the fascist reign of Franco in Spain. It is a tale of both fantastical horror and the real terrors of Franco’s brutal dictatorship. The fantastical world of Pan’s Labyrinth is contrasted with the very real world of Spain in 1944 with the young protagonist, Ophelia, placed in the middle. Her journey is a poignant one of the struggle to escape fascism.
Unfortunately it not currently available on any streaming services. It is available to rent from Amazon here.

Hi, Birrion. I was just reading the new (Feb 2022) issue of "In These Times." The editorial references the magazine's founding editor, historian James Weinstein, and how in 1976 he drew inspiration from the 1913 "Appeal to Reason," the Progressive Era socialist weekly published in Girard, Kansas: the masthead for your frontispiece. (Perhaps you explained that originally and I missed it, but better late than never!) Message me with your shipping address if you'd like me to send the issue. Thanks, and keep up the good fight!
