The second film I’m recommending follows on a similar theme to last week’s Salt of the Earth. This week’s film is STRIKE! by famed Soviet director Sergei Eisenstein. It is available with English subtitles for free on YouTube. Released in 1925, it is a silent film that relies heavily on imagery to convey the tale of a strike. It opens with the following quote from Lenin, “The strength of the working class is organization. Without organization of the masses, the proletarian is nothing. Organized it is everything. Being organized means unity of action, unity of practical activity.” And just some forewarning, the ending montage is brutally violent, contrasting the oppression of the working class with the slaughter of a cow. Not for the faint of heart.
I promise not every movie I recommend will be this brutal - A Bug’s Life is on my list.
