Before getting to this week’s movie, I want to recognize the passing of Melvin Van Peebles. He wrote the novel Panther: A Novel which was made into a film by his son Mario Van Peebles. Melvin passed on September 21, 2021. He also wrote and directed Sweet Sweetback's Baadasssss Song, which will probably be included on my film list at some point. He acted in, wrote, and directed many other projects for film and television. He will be greatly missed.
This week’s movie is Office Space. This is a classic comedy with anti-capitalist tones. I wouldn’t call it strongly communist or socialist, but it is critical of the broken capitalist system. And also hilarious, which helps during late stage capitalism. It’s been turned into a meme format which gives it a certain aura of internet fame at least. It also holds nostalgia for millennials with its Y2K reference.
