It’s a good day to remember that Star Wars was inspired by George Lucas’ interest in history - and it was particularly based on Vietnam. In addition to the Nazi references (stormtroopers being the most obvious), the evil Galactic Empire was based off of the United States. Emperor Palpatine was Nixon and the Rebel forces were the courageous North Vietnamese freedom fighters.

In addition to the original trilogy, the prequels, sequels, and stories have expanded upon these ideas of revolutionary change. The prequels added the clearly capitalist Corporate Alliance and Trade Federation and showed us how easily a Republic can slip into fascism through parliamentary politics. Han Solo showed us how a soldier of empire can be radicalized and had a dramatic slave rebellion in the form of droids - the slaves of the Star Wars universe. Rogue One - one of the best movies ever made in my humble opinion - was a lesson in insurgency warfare. The Last Jedi contained a direct attack on the military industrial complex and the capitalist class. And the final film, The Rise of Skywalker, ended with a true proletarian revolution.
While Star Trek’s post scarcity future is the ideal the left strives for, Star Wars has its own moments of leftist solidarity. Until the evil empire is defeated, there is no chance of a socialist future.
