This week’s reasonable movie is Children of Men. This movie is a bleak look at a dystopian future where a virus has ravaged mankind and no child has been born in 18 years. While it is roughly based on a novel of the same name by PD James, the premise reminds me of an earlier work by Frank Herbert, The White Plague. Where in Children of Men, women have become sterile due to the virus, in The White Plague they’re simply killed.
Although not a huge box office success, Children of Men has been widely acclaimed and is a brilliant take on a dystopian future that we seem to be living through today.
