The title of this post is a reference to the famous last words of Mercutio in Romeo and Juliet. He was cursing both Montagues and Capulets for their role in his death. A plague o’ both your houses. The victory of Donald Trump in the presidential election last night is a product of both parties and an expected result of their support of the capitalist system.
In a move most likely dictated by the donor class, Harris attempted to run to the right of Trump on issues such as immigration and war. She courted Republicans instead of appealing to the working class. Although the votes aren’t all counted, early polls show that only 5% of Republicans voted for Harris. Even though both parties stand for the same general policies, it turns out Republican voters still prefer the real Republican to the Democrat running on Republican policies.
The biggest disapointment of the election was the performance of third party candidates. Jill Stein only received around .4% of the vote. If third party anti-genocide candidates had received a larger portion of the vote, the defeat of Holocaust Harris could be seen as a rejection of US foreign policy and genocide. Unfortunately, voters primarily chose another genocidal candidate instead in Donald Trump. In some cases, this was to make sure that Harris did not win, but primarily it seems to have been a rejection of the status quo represented by the Democratic Party.
The Democrats continued to tell us that the economy was great, while the working class are suffering. NBC exit polls showed that 29% of voters are angry and 43% are dissatisifed about the way things are going in the country today. And since Biden/Harris have been in charge for the last four years, this reflects upon their policies. The biggest issue for Trump voters was the economy with 51% of them having it as their top issue. The top issue for Harris voters was the state of our Democracy, which is rather ironic considering Harris did not even win a single primary. Foreign policy was near the bottom for both with only 4% of Trump voters ranking it as their top issue and 3% of Harris voters.
As always, we see ‘It’s the economy, stupid’ is relevant today. The material conditions of the working class actually matter. Vibes and feelings are not going to keep food on the table. Voters do not care if Trump and Vance are weird as long as Biden/Harris did not deliver on their basic necessities. Bernie Sanders, who wholeheartedly endorsed Holocaust Harris and her genocidal agenda, said, “It should come as no great surprise that a Democratic Party which has abandoned working class people would find that the working class has abandoned them.” Yes, Bernie, we know. That’s why some of us left the Democratic Party after they rigged two primaries against you.
Even Bernie admits that the Democrats are unlikely to learn from this defeat. In fact, as I write this, I just received a fundraising email from Kamala Harris. They’re simply a fundraising machine. They raised over $1 billion and still couldn’t win against a convicted felon and rapist. The party deserves to die in darkness with weeping and gnashing of teeth.
But the liberals aren’t going to suddenly become a resistance force. The massive anti-Trump protests we saw in 2016 have yet to materialize. It looks like after blaming the left once again, they’re going back to brunch. Once again, it’s up to the actual left to fight Trumpism.
